Sea Kayak Test - Review Boreal Designs, Baffin P3 (IT,EN)

Disponibile in 3 taglie, il P3 che ho provato, è la misura più grande, 5.34 mt di lunghezza per 58.4 cm di larghezza, 415 lt di volume, adeguato a canoisti alti e robusti, da 90 a 130 kg circa.

Il Baffin, dalle piacevoli linee groenlandesi, con coperta molto bassa dietro il pozzetto, punta e coda rialzate, presenta finiture eccellenti, il polietilene è molto lucido e privo di difetti, corde ed elastici montati ad arte.

Esaminando i gavoni e relativi tappi troviamo un adeguato spazio di carico e una piacevole sorpresa per quanto riguarda i coperchi, il materiale è morbidissimo quindi si chiudono molto facilmente anche in condizioni di freddo estremo, la tenuta molto buona, a livello di sottovuoto come potrete notare da alcune foto.

Interessante la soluzione per lo skeg, una rotella a destra in coperta con cinque posizioni modulabili di apertura, il sistema è comodo e funzionale.

Il kayak è comodissimo, cosa rara nei kayak da mare che ho provato ultimamente, sedile anatomico, poggiaschiena in posizione corretta, premicosce adeguato e imbottito, puntapiedi classico a pedaliera (un po’ morbido), l’impostazione simile ai modelli da torrente permette un ottimo controllo anche in situazioni difficili ed è un piacere pagaiarci per ore.

In acqua, stabilità primaria buona, secondaria eccezionale, si rimane a lungo sul fianco senza alcun problema di equilibrio, grazie al fondo semi tondo dotato di spigoli sui fianchi il kayak è morbido ma risponde molto bene e gira velocissimo quando viene inclinato.

La punta tende parecchio al vento quando soffia lateralmente ma basta mettere giù lo skeg ed il problema è risolto completamente, sembra di essere su un binario.

Più che discreta la velocità, senza sforzare teniamo una media tra i sette e gli otto chilometri all’ora con punte fino a undici e poco più, dati positivi per un kayak in polietilene.

In conclusione, il kayak è molto maneggevole, abbastanza veloce, comodo e divertente, consigliato per pagaiate ovunque, sottocosta anche in condizioni di mare mosso, valido nel surf e sicuramente un’ottima scelta per lunghe percorrenze in qualunque situazione di mare.

Boreal Designs, Baffin P3 Test  EN

Available in 3 different sizes. I tried P3, the largest, 5.34mt long, 58.4cm wide, 415lt volume, it’s suitable to tall and large paddlers, from 90 to 130kg.

The Baffin, displays a nice greenland-style look with a very low deck in the backside of the cockpit and a higher bow and stern; then it shows a very shiny and defect-free PE with excellent finishes, and state-of-the-art ropes and elastic bands.

While having a closer look at the hatches, we find more than enough load space and a pleasant surprise with regards to caps. The type of rubber is super soft, hence you can close them very easily, even in an extreme cold conditions. 

Vacuum-sealing effect is very good as you can see from some of the pictures here.

The manufacturer found a very interesting solution with regards to the skeg, a small cogwheel with five different modular openings is positioned on the right hand deck. The system is comfortable and efficient.

The kayak is super comfy, thing that I seldom found in all the kayaks I recently tried. The seat is ergonomic, a well-positioned backband, well-suited thigh-braces, a classic footrest (a bit too soft); the setting, more similar to creek boats, allows a perfect control even in difficult situations and it’s a pleasure to paddle it, even for long time.

Let’s have a look at its behaviour in the water: good primary stability, very good secondary one and easy balance when you try to maintain it on one side; thanks to the semi-rounded hull with rails it’s very easy and quick to turn.

If the bow has been hit by the lateral wind, it’s enough to put the skeg down and the issue is completely solved, it seems to be on tracks.

The speed is more than reasonable, without applying too much effort we could maintain an average speed between seven and eight km/hr, with a peak of more than 11km/hr, very positive considering it’s a PE kayak.

In conclusion, this kayak is very maneuverable, quite fast, comfortable and pleasant, recommended for paddling almost everywhere, inshore, even in rough sea conditions, good for surfing and surely a very good choice for long paddling journey in any sea conditions.
