The 3 Best Whitewater- Crossover sit on tops Team test, review, Liquidlogic Coupè XP, Dagger Roam 9.5, Tootega Catalyst. (English-Italiano)

Here we are at the end of another season and once again looking for the best for our guests at Alpin Action.

This time we’re looking for the best white water sit on top suitable for beginners for our guided descents.

The target is to get a stable, easy to track for a newbie SOT, that could go straight, enough manoeuvrable and that it is as similar as possible to a creek kayak concerning performance. I start by saying that we have been using the Liquidlogic Coupè for years and we really like them, but let’s have a look if there is something better out there.

The competitors are: the classic Liquidlogic Coupè XP, the new Dagger Roam 9.5 and the Tootega Catalyst as a prototype.

Let’s have a look at them “onshore”.

 

Coupè Liquidlogic XP, it looks very nice, excellent finishes and equipment, comfortable handles, paddle holder, deluxe seat, 2 hatch covers (small), comfortable thigh straps but not very solid, wide rear slot with elastic bands to lock the gear and 6 draining holes. The built-in footrest is very handy, the skeg comes standard and the extremely useful rear wheel makes the transport very convenient.

Dagger Roam 9.5, accessories and finishes even better than Coupè, retractable handles, side handles for carrying, ergonomic seat, wide, robust straps and with bombproof attachments, adjustable footrest, wide rear slot with removable net and a zip closure that you can combine with the straps and becomes a nice backpack, useful for carrying. A big front hatch and a small rear hatch, elastic bands to store equipment on the bow and a handy bottle tray. Eight drain holes and standard skeg..

Catalyst, made by Tootega, a less known company, but well known in the UK for high quality Sit-on-Top manufacturing. It’s still a prototype so we don’t look too carefully at all the finishes, but it provides anyway very interesting standard equipment and features, like very solid bow, stern, central, side and rear handles for swimmers rescue, a wide rear hatch, straps attachments, a very strong metal seat and a built-in bottle tray. Being a prototype, even if very close to the final version, we had to set it up with straps and a seat coming from other brands to be able to test it in white water.

Now in the water.

The Coupè is the fastest, most stable and most directional than all the other three, it swamps a little and it drains quite quickly, a bit slow when maneuvering, it’s safe and while not excelling in performance either in white or in flat water it’s an excellent compromise enjoyable in every situation, stable on waves, not the best in and out of eddy lines, directional on flat water beginners will like it a lot and and so do experts. Being the oldest in terms of project design, it’s still a very good choice for easy and white water up to class 3.

Roam, super comfy and ergonomic as setting up, seat and straps; directional if maintained flat thanks to the pronounced hull on the bow and stern, it turns on a dime if you put it on the sidewall; on waves it swamps, but it drains very quickly, very easy in and out of eddies even if, due to its hull shape, it’s more difficult to rectify in case of a mistake. Being quite easy it’s the less stable than the other three, a very good choice for those who like easy water and only occasionally on white water up to class 2/3.

Catalyst, very stable, on waves it swamps very little, but it drains slower than its competitors, it’s the slowest, but the most manoeuvrable, in and out of eddies like a modern creek kayak, you can boof even on small waves, naturally inclined to white water I wouldn’t recommend it for sea, lake or flat water tour, but, definitely the best for creeks, safe and with excellent performances, it almost seems to paddle a creek kayak; to be used in white water up to class 4.

To summarize I’d say Coupè remains the most versatile, comfortable, equally suitable for flat and white water, beginner and expert. Roam, super comfy, it doesn’t love white water too much, but more recommended for flat and less technical water, very good choice for those who require high quality products. Catalyst is a pure creek SOT, recommended to anyone who likes to run white water rapids without being in a traditional kayak.

I 3 migliori sit on top da torrente test, prova comparativa,  Liquidlogic Coupè XP, Dagger Roam 9.5, Tootega Catalyst. Eccoci alla fine di un’altra stagione e ancora una volta alla ricerca del meglio per gli ospiti di Alpin Action. Questa volta siamo alla ricerca del miglior sit on top da acqua mossa per le nostre discese guidate per principianti. L’obiettivo da raggiungere è trovare un sit on top stabile, facile da condurre anche per un novizio, che vada abbastanza dritto, sufficientemente manovrabile e che assomigli il più possibile ad un kayak da torrente nelle prestazioni, premetto che sono ormai anni che usiamo i Liquidlogic Coupè e che ci troviamo benissimo ma….vediamo se c’è di meglio. I concorrenti sono il classico Liquidlogic Coupè XP, il nuovo Dagger Roam 9.5 e il prototipo del Tootega Catalyst.   Vediamoli a secco. Coupè Liquidlogic XP, si presenta molto bene, finiture ottime e dotazioni pure, comode maniglie, porta pagaia, sedile deluxe, 2 tappi (piccoli) per i gavoni, straps per le gambe comodi ma non robustissimi, ampio alloggiamento posteriore con elastici per bloccare il carico e 6 buchi di svuotamento, puntapiedi a pettine molto pratico, skeg di serie e l’utilissima ruota per il trasporto montata posteriormente.  vista da sopra ferma pagaia sedile deluxe e straps per le gambe vano posteriore con gavone leva per lo skeg il fondo la comoda ruota posteriore lo skeg Dagger Roam 9.5, accessori e rifiniture addirittura superiori al Coupè, maniglie a scomparsa, maniglie laterali per il trasporto, sedile ergonomico, straps di dimensioni generose, robusti e con attacchi a prova di bomba, puntapiedi regolabile, ampio alloggiamento posteriore con rete smontabile con chiusura a cerniera che smontata e abbinata agli straps si trasforma in un comodo zainetto per brevi escursioni a piedi durante la discesa,  grande gavone anteriore, piccolo gavone posteriore, elastici porta oggetti in punta e portabottiglia a portata di mano, otto fori di svuotamento, skeg di serie. la coperta vano posteriore con rete portaoggetti montata sedile, straps per le gambe, puntapiedi e porta bottiglia ferma pagaia gavone anteriore maniglia elastica estensibile vano posteriore con gavone e rete portaoggetti smontata rete portaoggetti e straps formano un comodo zaino lo zaino in azione sistema di regolazione dello skeg le comode regolazioni di sedile e fianchi il fondo lo skeg aperto Catalyst, prodotto da Tootega, una ditta meno conosciuta ma rinomata in Inghilterra per la produzione di Sit on Top di ottima qualità, è ancora a livello di prototipo quindi non esamineremo le rifiniture ma presenta dotazioni e caratteristiche molto interessanti, maniglie robustissime, punta e coda, centrale a livello del puntapiedi, laterali  e persino posteriori per il trasporto del canoista a bagno, ampio gavone posteriore, attacchi per straps e sedile in metallo estremamente resistenti, portabottiglia integrato, trattandosi di un prototipo, anche se in fase avanzata, abbiamo dovuto allestirlo con straps e sedile di altre marche per poterlo provare in acqua mossa. la coperta il fianco vista anteriore il fondo Ed ora in acqua. Il Coupè è il più veloce, stabile e direzionale dei tre, imbarca poca acqua e si svuota abbastanza velocemente, un po’ lento nelle manovre, infonde sicurezza e pur non eccellendo in prestazioni né in acqua mossa né in acqua ferma si conferma un ottimo compromesso godibile in ogni situazione, stabile sulle onde, discreto nelle entrate in morta e corrente, direzionale sul piatto, il principiante alle prime esperienze si troverà sicuramente benissimo e l’esperto potrà apprezzarne le caratteristiche neutre, pur essendo il più vecchio a livello di progetto rimane ancora un’ottima scelta per acque calme e mosse fino al terzo grado. Roam, comodissimo e super ergonomico come impostazione, sedile e straps, direzionale se tenuto piatto, grazie alla chiglia pronunciata in punta e coda, gira benissimo se messo sul fianco, sulle onde imbarca abbastanza acqua ma si svuota rapidissimamente, entra in morta e corrente con facilità anche se data la chiglia è più difficile da correggere in caso di errore, pur essendo facile è il meno stabile dei tre, un’ottima scelta per chi prevede un uso su acque più calme e occasionalmente su acqua mossa fino al secondo/terzo grado. Catalyst, stabilissimo, con onda imbarca pochissima acqua ma svuota più lentamente dei concorrenti, il più lento ma il più manovrabile, entra in morta e corrente come un moderno kayak da torrente, si possono fare i boof anche sulle onde più piccole, naturalmente portato per l’acqua mossa, non lo consiglierei per escursioni in mare, lago o acqua piatta, ma per torrente si, il migliore sotto ogni aspetto, facile, sicuro e con ottime prestazioni, sembra quasi di pagaiare in un kayak chiuso, utilizzabile in torrente fino al quarto grado. In conclusione direi, Coupè rimane il più versatile, comodo, adatto egualmente al piatto e al mosso, principiante ed esperto, Roam, comodissimo, non disdegna l’acqua mossa ma più indicato per il piatto e le difficoltà minori, ottima scelta per chi vuole un prodotto di alta qualità, Catalyst invece è un sit on top da torrente puro, consigliato a chiunque voglia affrontare le rapide senza essere in un kayak chiuso.
