Test pagaie turismo mare e lago 2014 (IT,EN)

Test pagaie turismo mare e lago 2014

Ophion Touring

Pro: Invita a spingere, pala potente, molto bilanciata, appoggi eccellenti.

Pale e manico in carbonio, manico “Neutral bent shaft”, pale “foam core”.
Percorso standard 5 km, media 8 kmh.

Valida nelle sfilate, sufficiente nell’appoggio basso, buona in eskimo e appoggio alto.

EN
Ophion Touring

New from Ophion, carbon blades, carbon straight and oval-ized (right side) shaft which provides a pleasant feeling of flexibility, extremely light and with powerful blades.
Although I’m more used to the bent shaft, this paddle seems very well balanced and easy to use. The blade shape is something in between high-angle and low-angle style, even if the tendency is more towards the first one. I’ve tried a 220cm length version which is also something in between what I’m currently using (215cm high-angle and 225cm low-angle) and I have got immediately the feeling this paddle needs a very aggressive paddling stroke.
Very good on low brace, acceptable on high brace, slicing is not the easiest thing, but under control. During the attack stroke it’s very accurate and clean when used as high-angle style, less if used as low-angle style, but clean extraction.
Average speed: 7.3kmh on a 5km length, calm sea, 20cm waves
Pros: tendency to push, it forces you to paddle in a correct way with the right torso rotation.
Cons: it doesn’t allow a relaxed paddling, lack of drip rings, heavy feeling on shoulders.
Recommended:  for well fit and aggressive paddlers, for tourism and expeditions, for short stretches suitable to workouts too.

Select Matrixx

I’ve tested the adjustable ergo shaft, with S.Lock 2 system, which allows an unlimited angle change and with a length adjustment range from 215cm to 224cm. The blade has a 720cm² surface (the widest) and a 50.5x19.8cm size, both shaft and blades are made of carbon, 820g  total weight and integrated drip rings.
Available in three sizes:  590 – 660 – 720 cm².
The hybrid concept of this paddle, allows the use either as low-angle or as  high-angle by only changing the length. For example the 590 is an S – low-angle, the 660 is both an L – low-angle and an  S –  high-angle and the  720 is an L – high-angle.
The difference between low and high-angle is that the low-angle foresees a paddling style more relaxed, with a slow rhythm, keeping the paddle more horizontal, typically used for long journeys, whereas the high- angle is a more vertical paddling style, with frequent strokes, mainly used during training, sprint, surfing and shorter stretches.
Soft and accurate during the attack phase, when used in a low-angle mode, it appears very relaxing. On the other hand, when used in high-angle mode you need to push a lot. I’ve tried different angles, but I agree with the manufacturer who recommends 60° offset between the blades for both paddling styles.
Good feelings during braces, the slicing is clean with no resistance in the water and without creating air bubbles.
Average speed: 7kmh, on a 5km distance, moderate swell, 43cm waves, 21kmh side wind with gusts at 41kmh, bora.
Pros: relaxing when used in low angle style, pushing when used in high angle style, personally I found it more pleasant in high angle mode. Ovalization on both left and right shaft, very accurate grip , it doesn’t tire the shoulders, excellent finishes.
Cons: not very accurate if used in low-angle mode, the grip on the bent shaft could be longer in order to allow a wider choice when handling. A bit too rigid.
Recommended: for medium fit paddlers  with both styles, suitable for long and relaxing journeys, expeditions and tourism in general.

Select X.TR

Top of the range from Select, the so called masterwork of the tour paddles – as they define it –. Once again I’ve tried the full carbon version with ergo shaft. In this case the blades are “foam core” namely a high density foam within carbon layers sandwitch which provides additional flotation to the blades and a softer behaviour in the water beside to an easier eskimo roll.
As for Matrixx I’ve tried an adjustable one with the S.Lock 2 system  which allows an unlimited angle change and with a length adjustment range from 215cm to 224cm. The blade has a 720cm² surface and a 50.5x19.8cm size, 856g weight and integrated drip rings. Also in this case possibility to use either as low- angle or as  high-angle, three sizes available, 590 – 660 – 720cm² blade surface.
Again, as for Matrixx it’s available with either straight or bent shaft and for both versions you can get them in one piece or adjustable in two pieces with two different systems, Fast Lock which allows to increase the shaft length by 3cm at a time, but not to change the angle, or S Lock2, with unlimited angle variations, left and right and a micro length adjustment.
Today, 24th of November 2013, it’s 10:21 and I’m going  to test it in the water, therefore the real impressions will follow soon.
Rock solid, very accurate and noiseless during the attack phase, strong but under control during the forward stroke. It requires to push when used as low-angle, a little less when used as high-angle, the optimal shaft grip allows a relaxed handle and despite being a little heavier than its sister Matrixx the feeling in the water is definitely better, excellent during high and low braces and during slicing.
Even the  X.TR seems to behave at its best with a 60° angle – as recommended by the manufacturer. (my usual one is 45°)
Average speed:  7.0 kmh  on 5 km, moderate swell, 23cm waves, 34kmh side wind with gusts at 52kmh, Bora.
Pros: well balanced, nice grip, smooth in the water, noiseless, perfect braces and slices, I like the additional flotation of the foam core despite being in the central area of the blade only, powerful but not tiring.
Cons: as for Matrixx short grip, rigid shaft.
Recommended: for well fit people, but for beginners and intermediate too, as it’s easy to use.  Personally I’d prefer it in a low-angle style to use for long distances, even if – making it shorter – it behaves very well in sprints and surfing. Suitable for touring, expeditions and workouts.

Werner Corryvrecken
Light and robust, it’s the ideal solution for well fit paddlers for a high-angle use; perfectly made, as usual, when we talk about Werner.
Carbon-made with “neutral bent shaft” patended by Werner Paddles.
This version is the largest of this group – L, but there’s a smaller one (M size) called Shuna, beside to all the other versions with straight shaft, resin or carbon blades, a nylon blade with carbon fibers reinforce version, Tybee CF and a nylon blade with fiberglass reinforce version, Tybee FG – both with M size blades
Blade surface is 721cm², 49cm long and 20.25cm wide, 801g weight with straight shaft, 886g with neutral bent shaft, available total lengths (with 5cm increase) 205, 210, 215, 220cm with “Adjustable ferrule/Smart-view” and angle change with increase by 15° in both left or right, with the size view and a blind release clip. This system works perfectly even after 400km of use. It’s not possible to adjust the length.

28th of November, 11.44, it’s time to go in the water and test it. Almost calm see with 8cm waves, weak side wind E-NE 9kmh with 64kmh gusts. Outside temperature 8°C.
As always, 5km distance at 8.0kmh average speed.
The first sensation while handling it is that it’s very well balanced, I set the angle at  45°, my favourite and I feel like at home, very accurate, noiseless, in both biting and slicing, perfect in the water without any issue, very good bent shaft which reduces shoulders stress and enough wide to allow different grips according to paddler arm lentgth.
Excellent high brace,  low brace and eskimo roll, perfect slicing, all the main features of a high-angle style paddle.
Pros: aggressive, powerful blade, very well balanced, excellent braces. You can appreciate it either an aggressive way of paddling or a more relaxed one.
Cons: not suitable to not fit paddlers, in this case I recommend the Shuna, the smaller blade version.
Recommended: for fit paddlers, for medium length journeys, for aggressive and vertical paddling style, ideal for very rough seas.

Werner Ikelos

This extremely light, “Foam Core” top range version from Werner is suitable to a high-angle style and for the most aggressive paddlers, thanks to the extra buoyancy of the blades and to a super smooth backside surface without any protrusions.
Full carbon shaft and blades,  “Neutral bent shaft”,  “foam core” blades.
Blade surface 710cm²,  blade size 48.5 x 19.75, total length 215 cm,  weight 787 g. Straight shaft version weights 702 g. Recommended lengths from 205 to 220 cm.
Like the Corrywrecken, the shaft is equipped with the “Adjustable Ferrule Smart- view” system, which allows angle change of 15° increase and the possibility to always check the selected angle also when the assembly has made.
Today, 4th December 2013, I’ve tested it with nearly calm sea conditions, 20cm waves, 4kmh wind with 22kmh gusts, outside temperature 9°C. (I’ve used it all last winter long for a distance of more than 400km).
Standard itinerary 5km, average speed 8.0kmh.
In the water it keeps its word, with a 45° set-up it likes an aggressive paddling style, the extra buoyancy of the blades allows excellent performance during braces, eskimo rolls and during all the related strokes like slicing ecc.  The ergo shaft keeps wrists aligned to the forearm during the paddling strokes and reduces fatigue, then it enhances the contact surface between the hand and the shaft producing a more relaxed grip.
Pros: excellent in braces, slicing thanks to the “foam core”, very smooth due to the back side blade surface with no protrusions. Very accurate and noiseless in the water.
Cons: just the price.
Recommended: for fit paddlers, high-angle style, sprint, marathon, surfing, ideal with rough and very rough seas, for those who would prefer the low-angle style, I suggest the Kalliste model, also equipped with foam core, tested last year also excellent, 680g weight with straight shaft or 765g with ergo shaft. Or the new Ovation, again low-angle, foam core, limited edition for the 50th anniversary of Werner, 567g straight shaft or 645g ergo shaft. This last version a bit more fragile.

Tywarp Tour
This quite narrow and elongated blade shape, allows a low-angle and relaxed paddling, so you immediately have the impression to be able to paddle effortless for all day long. Very easy to use.
Although after a few warming up strokes, I’ve started to push it a bit more and I have to say that the response was excellent, it’s stable, accurate in the water, it allows good sprints thanks to the blade shape – wider to the edges – and it provides a nice feeling of power.
The version under test has carbon shaft and fiber blades and an acceptable weight, even if I’d prefer the ergo shaft and carbon blades, this combination is worth the money.
Good in slicing, moderate in low braces, good for eskimo rolls and high brace.
The adjusting system allows unlimited angle change and extension up to 10cm. It’s not particularly stylish, but it works fine. I’ve tested with a 223cm and a 233cm length and I’ve preferred the longer version.
5km itinerary, almost calm sea, 20 cm wave, 10 kmh NE wind, average speed 7.7 kmh
Pros: easy to use, effortless, nice on sprints, good value for money, a paddle for everybody.
Cons: the shaft joining system is quite poor, the attached label with the specs, is made of paper, so it’s destroyed after the first trip. Acceptable finishes.
Recommended: for those who likes to save some money it’s a good choice, ideal for beginners, intermediate and advanced paddlers, the cheaper version equipped with fiber shaft and blades has an unbeatable price, whereas the full carbon one can meet the most demanding paddler’s requirements.

Tywarp Wave
Same structure as the Tour I’ve mentioned above, carbon straight shaft, fiber blades. Also in this case I appreciated the nice mix between the rigid shaft and the flex blade which prevents wrists and articulations from stress.
Wider blade than the Tour, it’s more suitable to the high-angle style, but – by increasing the length – it’s also a good choice for the low-angle style. I’ve tested an adjustable one 223-233 cm, found it better at 223, even if as a high-angle I would have preferred an even shorter size.
No issues during slicing, braces and rolls.
Same adjusting system as the Tour. It plays its role sufficiently, moderate finishes, good price.
Same 5km itinerary, nearly calm sea, 15cm waves, 10 km N wind, average speed 7.8 kmh.
Pros: design, colour, price, pleasant as high-angle less aggressive, good mix weight, rigidity/flexibility
Cons: like the Tour the shaft joining system is quite poor, the attached label with the specs, is made of paper, so it’s destroyed after the first trip.
Recommended: a right price and good quality paddle, suitable for medium length journeys, for rough seas and waves, suggested to every paddler’s level, from beginner to advanced.
