ZET - Five

Infine, peso decisamente contenuto. Piacevole sorpresa!

Specifiche:
lunghezza: 270cm
larghezza: 65cm
volume: 300L
peso canoista: dichiarato sul sito ufficiale: 60-90kg secondo me ideale 60-80kg

Cosa mi è piaciuto di più:
linea gradevole
velocità/accelerazione
piacere di “guida”
ottimo comportamento nel volume e nel creek stretto
eskimo super facile
peso contenuto

Cosa mi è piaciuto di meno:
premicosce da “lavorare”
ingresso e uscita dalla barca poco agevole

A presto in fiume

I’m a happy owner of the new Zet Five for about three months, therefore I could try it in different alpine environments during this amazing season in terms of water levels, until today with quite low water. The conclusion is very positive, especially for my weight (70kgs), but let’s proceed step by step.

The boat is one size-fits-all, but I could define it as an “M”. Esthetically it looks pretty nice and slim, you immediately notice how narrow it is and also the pronounced rocker both in the front and rear.

The outfitting is the typical Zet one, a bit minimalist, but well-made and just working fine, excellent quality foam pillars covered in the front area with the plastic coming from the mold set, solid trapezoidal structure positioned underneath the seat, very comfortable hard rubber seat, classic adjustable footrest equipped with aluminum guides, well positioned in height backband with adjustable ratchets.

The thigh braces for my taste, even if they are adjustable back and forth (same as the former Raptor), have the tendency to push a bit too much the legs towards the bottom providing a feeling that I don’t like particularly, but easily overcoming by smoothing the excess of foam with a scraper.

The hull is made with the usual robust and quite soft Zet plastic, continuous rocker like I said before, flat bottom with no rails and rounded sides. Finally, the weight with much pleasure definitely low. Nice surprise!

The first impression once seated, is a little difficulty in getting in and out above all if we imagine an emergency where you have to be quick, due to the fact that being that narrow (65cm) the space between the front pillar and the thigh braces is not that wide. But this at the end will be the only “cons” for this boat.

In the water you feel a bit of primary instability when not moving, coming from the rounded sides, but when you start paddling it’s pure fun! The boat speeds up and it maintains the speed. It’s impressive, it flies!

Very good maneuverability, it turns on a dime, but being without rails you can take it right back to the line in case of mistake. On the other hand, it has the tendency to drift a bit. It’s an auto-boof machine and thanks to the well distributed volume in the stern it gets out of the post-landing turbulence at a very high speed. I really liked it either in high water or in narrow steep creeks. Super easy roll, it almost comes back upward by itself!

At the same time then, it’s not a boring boat for lazy paddlers getting down with few paddle strokes and some low braces, it’s a boat that requires a continuous attention and a substantial and constant control with feet/thighs/hips/abs, only in that way you can appreciate it at its very best.

The Five is also part of the family of the newly designed “dynamic” boats (Dagger Phantom, Jackson Nirvana, Dragorossi DR9, Piranha 9r) specifically designed for white water races, but more and more used for all kinds of rivers and for the everyday paddling.

But again, these are boats that require a good physical condition and a different dexterity, more modern, more on the flow. In such case great satisfactions will be expected, above all with the Five!

Specs:
length: 270cm
width: 65cm
volume: 300L
paddler recommended weight: on the website: 60-90kg, to me ideal 60-80kg

What I liked most:
nice look
speed/acceleration
“driving” pleasure
great in big water and in steep creeking
super easy roll
low weight

What I liked less:
thigh braces to rework a bit
in and out of the boat not that easy and quick

Be safe in the river
Beppe
