Tuna 2.0 First impressions

This year I've decided the time has come to change my beloved Waka Tuna, but what can stand against the Tuna?? Well nothing except the new Tuna!

Beware: this review is about the brand new model, the Made-in-Italy Tuna! Feel free to call it Tuna 2.1, because there are differences between this new model and the first Tuna 2.0, while the first series 2.0 was rounded, the new 2.1 is very flat!
(If you take a look very close, you can guess the Italian company making the new Tuna :) )

Look:

At first, looking at the photos, I felt very disappointed: "where are all the edges??" I kept on asking myself. Then, as soon as I had it in front of me, I changed my mind completely: it’s very beautiful! I definitely like it!

The hull is extremely flat: when you put the old Tuna and the new one side by side you can easily see the difference. It looks like it has less rocker both in the front and in the back, but I guess something it's only because it sits lower due to the flat hull

The shape of the hull is the same, but the rails are softer in the front.

The plastic, of course, is different, way stiffer and more glossy! It has a very good feeling.

Outfittings:

The seat is the same as before, just with a new mattress (with an unexpected dragon??). Very comfortable!

A lot of hip pads are included... but the pocket is too wobbly!

The footrest is solid and strong, but in order to move close enough for my height I needed to cut part of the front pillar (made in foam)! And when it is so far back the space between the footrest and the hull gets too wide,  so I had to cut a piece of foam to fill the spaces.

The handles are beautifully made in black aluminum, stronger and better positioned than the old Tuna

The hull has no holes except for the ones for the footrest!

The pillars are made from foam, held in place with aluminum brackets.

As far as thigh braces are concerned... well, here come the problems...

I don’t understand why some manufacturers are following the trend of fixed thigh braces made from the hull. The boat is thought for paddlers ranging from 70 to 90kg, the seat is adjustable, the footrest is adjustable... so why should the thigh braces be fixed???

For sure, some people will find them perfect (for sure those who are as tall as the one who designed the boat... unfortunately for me, Sam and Kenny are taller than me...)

Let’s be clear: these thigh braces are not terrible, but compared to the old ones, they look and feel worse!

I've used a lot of foam to get a proper fit, but I’m still missing the support of the old Tuna.

I’m thinking about making few holes in the hull and put a dragorossi thigh braces inside...
Yeah they already thought about that… but in that position is too weak, you need to fix it to the external part of the cockpit!

On the water:

I had the chance to try the new Tuna only for few laps a low-water Sesia, so take this review as a very first impression (
video here)

Fast, super fast! So fast you'd better get a seatbelt! When landing after a boof, it’s hard to paddle, due to the speed you get!

Way more aggressive! I love the feeling of a proper flat hull catching eddies and moving on top of water!

Despite the flatter hull, it’s softer on the edge and way easier in the Eskimo roll.

Like the old one it likes to stay on top of the water, but I feel like the bow is less wave-stomping than the old one.

Compared to the old Tuna, I've moved the seat slightly back (way better seat adjustment with holes in places of a slider) because I felt like the bow was too low in the water catching waves and current. Placing the seat a little more in the back, it feels better, but honestly, to judge properly, I must try the boat when the water is pushing!

So, in the end?

Fast, very fast! Softer but more aggressive, more technical, less rapid-smasher, maybe a little less forgiving, but I need to spend more time in it!

Ouftitting: Good seat, not so good footrest hip pads and thigh braces.

Looking forward for some rain to test Tuna2.1 properly!!

Ah, you're asking about the boof??

Of course the boof is great!

Tuna 2.0 prime impressioni

Attenzione! Sto parlando della Waka 2.0 made in italy!

Come va:

Interni alti e bassi: sedile meglio, premi cosce, punta piedi e spessori laterali peggio.
