Učja river- description (testo in Italiano)

UČJA RIVER

It`s Friday night and a forecast for north western Slovenia is promising. It`s hard to predict how much rain is going to fall but I prepare my equipment anyway. I weak up next morning to check the water levels on the net. Učja is running, it has a perfect flow of 18 cubic meters. It is still raining outside and rain is predicted throughout the day. After a few calls our team is ready and on the way to Učja valley we still don`t know how the water level will be.

This is the way Učja is; always under a question. And this is just one of the scenarios that can happen. For me Učja is a pearl, a piece of beautiful, pristine nature hidden in a deep gorge far from daily problems, surrounded by many side streams and consisting of lots of great rapids…

Učja River: class 5+, 6.5 km

Water level: 10–20 cm3, 150–200 cm?

Style: Gorge, technical rapids, difficult scouting

TAKE OUT:

There is a bridge that is going over Učja at the end of Žaga town on the way to Bovec . The best thing to do is to leave a car at the restaurant parking place next to the bridge. There is a path leading to a suspension bridge 100m upstream. You can check the water level on a gauge under the bridge.

PUT IN:

There is a road going from town of Žaga to Italy, just follow the road signs. Put in is at a border crossing between Slovenia and Italy. It is best to leave a car at the ex Italian border house passing over the bridge.

DESCRIPTION:

Učja is a very varied river, usually dry but after rain surprisingly full of water. It depends of the water level how difficult it is. Even with low water is a dangerous gorge run. Once you are in it is very difficult to get out. There are several rapids that are must-runs and sometimes hard to scout. Thinking before acting is very important. A few rapids are not runnable and siphons are a fact. Catching the last eddy and looking over your shoulder to see the rapid is a practice that is more than welcome. The easiest way to describe it is to divide the river in 3 parts.

PART 1 (warm up and a nasty canyon): From the take in there are several small rapids until you come to a narrow slot drop that is curving from the right to left. Scouting is required, if you can`t see yourself doing this class 5 rapid, it is better that you go out until you have a chance. After this drop the action starts. Many good class 5 rapids follow, all in a same narrow gorge stile. Kayakers with good read and run skills will have fewer problems but for sure scouting is necessary. Be careful at a tricky rapid under a side crick that is drooping over a water fall on the river right. Portaging is a little bit hard but possible on the river left. This is also the point where a hard canyon starts. Scouting the canyon is an absolute must. It is possible to scout the canyon on the river left, paddle the first rapid and portage the second ugly rapid on river right but you need some climbing skills and a good safety set up.  Second option is to portage all around the canyon, river left, for 1h.

PART 2 (the core section):  Once you pass the canyon you relax a little but only until you realise that you are even deeper in the mess. Walls are high above you, rapids are getting pushier, side creeks are giving more water, river is changing its character and is getting wider. Rapids follow one after  another, scouting is necessary everything is more fragmented and siphons are all over the place! After a time you will see a big avalanche that  is coming from a river left and right, make sure you catch an eddy on river right! It is a delicate place, watch out where you step.

PART 3 (wide gorges, it is not over):  Claustrophobic moments are over but there is no time to relax as there is still a lot to paddle and some dangerous siphons are there. Some easy rapids are very dangerous. Once you see a summit of Polovnik Mountain you are close to the end. At the suspension bridge go out in the small eddy on river left. After the bridge there is a lethal rapid!

Imbarco all’ex confine Italia Slovenia, lasciare le macchine all’ex confine italiano dopo il ponte.

DESCRIZIONE:
