Dragorossi DRX (EN : IT)

This is not a novelty, in fact, the last creeker of the Bergamo-based company came out in the spring of last year, but due to the generous dimensions, which seemed to me not suited to my body, I had never tried it: a serious mistake. But let's go in order and begin to examine its characteristics.

The declared specifications are: length 274 cm, width 69 cm, volume 360 liters, weight 21 kg. The data are substantially correct, apart from the weight, which in the tested model was over 23 kg. (which is sadly becoming the standard weight for many creekers).

The layout and finishes are substantially similar to the previous DR models, with the exception of the completely redesigned thighbrace, which today appears integrated into the cockpit and offers excellent control and comfort even for small paddlers. Really great progress.

At first glance, what catches the eye is the huge size of the front: the tip is high, wide and voluminous. The greater width is located in front of the cockpit, while the tail appears less whide (while maintaining an absolute generous volume) and almost disproportionate to the front. The cockpit, very large and easy to access, is also slightly moved towards the rear, so that the seat is set back from the longitudinal center of the hull.

The rails, not very pronounced, are present only in the rear part of the bottom, while the front part is planing, but with rounded edges and sides.

The rocker is mixed: phased at the front, with an upward detachment of the tip reminiscent of some Corran Addison designs, such as Mafia and Big Gun; posteriorly it is instead progressive and continuous. A solution that has not been seen for a while and in contrast to most of the models on the market today that apply the progressive rocker on the whole hull or progressive front and rear phases (see for example the Waka Goat and Billy Goat, Steeze, OG, Liquidlogic Alpha, etc ...).

There are four handles (plus a stainless steel strength in front of the cockpit), the usual DR, comfortable to hold but not particularly elegant and above all heavy, also due to the screws used, which seem oversized. It would be desirable that the next improvement to the brand from the rampant dragon would go in this direction.

Test in the water.

The first thing that strikes you is the good internal setting and the feeling of agility and handling, surprising for a hull of this size. Stability is excellent, both primary and secondary, but you do not feel that "barge" feeling that models of similar size but with a flatter bottom return. Despite my light weight (70 kg. Equipped and wet) it is not at all difficult to tilt the boat on the hedges, even without significant shifts in the center of gravity, but only, correctly, thanks to the action of the muscles of the legs and pelvis. Really a pleasant surprise. At the same time, putting the balance in difficulty requires important imbalances.

Speed and acceleration are pretty good for a hull of this width, but the handling and the ability to control and correct the direction, even at the last moment, are excellent, both in flat water and, above all, in rapid.

I tried the DRX on non-extreme routes (my age and physical condition no longer allow me) but on classic alpine routes as technical (such as Germanasca and high gorges of the Guil) as well as volume (like a beautiful swollen Gyronde) I found it almost embarrassing ease. The kayak can be carried easily at speed with a sporty and modern handling, but it also forgives a less dynamic and "defensive" handling, without ever breaking down or showing unexpected reactions. It is quite easy to correct the trajectory even at the last moment and at speed, which cannot be said of many modern creekers. No problem in the passage of slopes and holes. In this case, due to the high volume of the tip and the center of gravity shifted to the rear, the kayak tends to rear up, but without slowing down and always continuing its forward run, a behavior common to many modern creekers. Even in these cases it always remains easy to control. To overturn you have to make a really bad mistake, but in this case the roll is soft and easy.

In summary, I found no defects in the behavior in the water of this kayak, always easy, safe and predictable. A really good kayak, not only for heavy paddlers, as its volume would suggest, but also for medium-light paddlers on higher difficulties. All at a very affordable price compared to the competitors, it is in fact the only kayak of this class and with these safety equipment that has a list price of less than one thousand euros; in consideration of this he can safely forgive the small defects (weight, handles ...) reported.

Prova in acqua.
