Alpin Action - crew Giovanni Mortin

Giovanni Mortin

In paesi extraeuropei ho pagaiato in Costa Rica, Messico, Cile, Argentina, Marocco, Zambia, Nepal.
Il fiume più bello?........ L’ultimo.

Dagger- Axiom test (IT)

Dagger Axiom

Fluid Bazooka test (IT,EN)

Bune discese e buon divertimento!

Giovanni Mortin

                Test Fluid  Bazooka – EN

The kayak company based in South Africa, recently moved its manufacturing site to the US and today we’re here to review its new creek boat, the Bazooka.

Let’s start from the heart of this new creation.

There were bunch of rumours about the new outfitting and I was curious to see how does it look like. It’s totally renewed and lighter compared to the previous system. The new seat has several backward and forward adjustment possibilities, simply releasing a knob nut. Also the height can be adjusted through side screws.

For the hips, there are foam pads fixed with easily adjustable straps allowing the possibility of adding more pads if needed. The backband, maybe to compensate the range of sitting, is quite large, maybe too much. The thigh braces are quite robust, easy to adjust and with ratchets to tighten the backband. All the assembly – seat, backband and thigh braces – is covered with a soft water-repellent rubber layer.

The front plastic pillar seems quite robust. Well positioned and not too bulky so that it’s easy and quick to escape in case of bad jams, this is also getting easier for the wide cockpit.

The footrest is nice&easy to adjust too, but after you’ll find your position, I’d suggest fixing the plate at the back of the foam block with a piece of tape.

Now let’s have a look at the hull. Here we can find a totally new design compared to the old Fluid Solo. On the deck we have five strong grab loops, with an easily attachable carabiner, appreciated on a creek boat. The Bazooka has big volume and you’ll notice that especially at the cockpit’s sides and around the stern. The bow shape is distorting its real dimensions. The bottom starts with a round shape in the front, then almost flat in the centre with side rails up to the stern. This feature should give speed, stability and accuracy when making a line.

I tested it in different situations and every time it highlighted great stability due to the big volume and the hull shape. On big water, waves, stoppers you have the feeling to fly over everything and waves can be used as a launching pad. Thanks to its hull with rails, wave surfing can be easy and enjoyable.

In steep creeking I found boofing extremely easy, very stable both in taking off and landing, with a confirmed stability on the wide side too. When it’s time to manoeuvre in steep and narrow environment, I noticed that by moving back and raising the seat, the agility increased a lot, probably in this position the stern volume and the rear hull give their best.

All the different adjustment possibilities of the set-up, help you quite a lot to change boat features, but at the same time, they can create some confusion as they’re not immediately intuitive, it would be helpful to enclose with the kit a short manual together with an Allen key.

To sum up, the main benefits I found are primary and secondary stability, boof for everybody, good response on the waves during surfing and carving.

What I liked least is where Fluid wanted to be more generous, namely the seat; I’d prefer it a bit smaller to ease back movements, then I’d decrease a little the volume around the cockpit in order to have more workspace, but I’m not too tall, so I should work more on the setting up.

With the Bazooka, Fluid has made significant changes and you can see it especially in the outfitting, where they were lacking. Even the appearance is now more attractive, the only thing to evaluate is its strength, but I think there will be someone who will provide this test as well.

See you in the river and have fun!

I just like to add to the already exhaustive review by Giovanni an impression from my side I got during a test run on the slalom course of the Soca river with a nice 70m³/sec water level, therefore you can imagine high pressure, whirpools, stoppers and boiling eddy lines. I was paddling the M version and I have to say it was flawless, it was keeping perfectly the direction, but it turned immediately when needed. By mistake I hit a big stopper which I wish I had avoided, but it went through it like a class II wave. So I can say it’s really a super boat on big water. Now I’ll try to test it on a steep creek to realize its behaviour.

Pyranha Shiva M test (EN)

What I first thought by looking at the boat is that it was going to be very rigid. I honestly thought that I wasn’t going to like it. I was afraid putting it on the water for the first time as I was about to do a highest water descent of a Soča Cataract I had ever done on a suggestion of my crazy friend Andrej Bijukčič. 150 m3/s of volume on a siphonish class V section wasn’t where I would normally take a new boat but I figured I could always take out if I felt the boat wasn’t responding to me. I was really blown away by the first metres I did and I knew instantly that my estimates were wrong. The boat was fast, turned whenever I wanted it to but besides that almost never drifted off line. It actually handled a lot like a bit longer slalom boat (without the stern turn advantage of course). The boat is narrow, which makes it a bit more unstable than most contemporary river runners but it also has a bigger draft than most, which by my opinion makes it less influenced by the surface boils. Shiva really turned out to be a great big volume kayak by this features alone, but what surprised me the most was the function of this strange big stern – narrow bow design. The ease with which it busts through big stoppers is incredible, like a hot knife through butter.

In the next days I took Shiva down some low volume technical creeks. I again wasn’t disappointed. I must say that in my opinion it is not a distinct Creeker. It lacks some looseness for manoeuvring amongst tight low-volume lines. I got stuck between two rocks on a delicate spot just because it kept too much speed while turning. Yes, good carving capabilities aren’t good in all situations which just proves it’s impossible not to have compromises in kayaks. Other than that I had no complains. I knew instantly Shiva is hard to overboof so there’s no use pulling really hard on drops. It boofs as much as it can, which is enough to land safe (and usually soft) on any kind of a drop. It also keeps speed on landings and rarely goes into “cobra mode” (stern stall). I guess it is so because of its bulky backside and a lower back rocker. I thought I would mind the lack of control here but I really never missed it too much while testing the boat. It just has a distinctive way it has to be ridden. Shiva’s character isn’t as playful as Burn’s. It felt like a “serious” kayak which I would suggest to anyone that needs a reliable boat that doesn’t surprise you very often. It is interesting how different Shiva felt to me compared to a description Pyranha markets it by. And that proves what I had written earlier about paddler profile affecting kayak performance, so go on and test it yourself. I guarantee you’ll enjoy the experience.

Sea kayak test (IT,EN)

Finally a warm and sunny day after fourteen days of hard Siberian wind and cold. It was a perfect, to meet Piero and Matej in Trieste and try some new sea kayak models for this season trips. We had four  good kayaks on the water and we get some nice information for us and for sure for you paddlers.

I will start with new Rainbow Laser 5.50. They modified older Laser (which was also on test) with some new toys on the boat. The first which catches your eye is a hand stick on the right side of the cockpit and it's a inadequate when you’re paddling because you can injure your finger. Seat and place for the legs are nice and comfortable. If you like to take a lot of luggage with you, in this boat is not a problem. With turning it is classic sea kayak felling and nice gliding with or in the waves. Strong winds might cause some balance problem to inexperienced paddlers but overall result is classic sea kayak for middle to good paddlers.

Laser 5,15 from Rainbow  is a boat for people who like traditional sea kayak. I would say classic boat because I didn't found anything that would be better to change. Nice speed, good balance, position in the boat is perfect. The result is that this sea kayak is for young and old, beginners and pro paddlers... just enjoying.

Freccia from Rainbow is sea kayak for BIG people, that’s all I can say. It’s a boat with a big hole and a lot of space for the legs and balance is very good. So if you have some more kg don't be shame to take this boat on the trip because when you will get a bad weather you are surely safe.

A new wave of sea kayaks were represented by Delphin from P&H. In a joke we said a playboat for the sea, but when you try it, it surprises you in a moment how easy is to turn or to make 360 almost in one spot. It's better turning than down river kayak boat. Position and seat are in right place, what I like the most is when you paddling straight you can fell how soft can be your stroke. If you like rivers you will like ocean more and more. We tested the average speed of the boats with GPS and I was surprised that this boat is fast like normal sea kayaks. The result is very good new line of sea kayak, line for every one who like to surf the waves, nice few days trip and daily paddling after job.

Dejan Kralj

Dejan Kralj, traduzione e note Piero Linda

P&H Delphin 155 turns traditional sea kayak design on its head and challenges many preconceived ideas of how a sea kayak should look and behave. The cockpit has been move backwards and the stern squared off so the bow just kisses the water, but when paddling the stern engages and aids tracking. This combination is unique to the Delphin creating a kayak that is long enough to paddle like a traditional sea kayak on flat water with enough speed to keep up with the pack but will transform into a new genre of free-ride sea kayak when it hits moving water, coming alive in tide races, over falls and surging water.
