Dragorossi DR9 test - review

Dragorossi DR9 first impression – EN
It seems we are right in a technology change, size don’t matter anymore in the sense of kayak volume! And also Dragorossi seems to have gone in this direction in terms of innovative design concept and space distribution and hence we (Small/Medium size people) found ourselves to easily lead a >340L kayak. Having said that, let’s talk about the new born DR9 (=DragoRossi 9ft long). This time the team didn’t strive too much to pick-up a fancy name, but correctly the time has been employed to design a performing and nice-looking hull.

The first feature that I’ve spotted is the cockpit size, finally wide enough comparing to the previous models. An eye on safety, well done! The bow is definitely high with a good and modern rocker. Also the stern is quite high, not too long and with a large volume right behind the cockpit to maintain stability out of a drop. The semi-planning hull with no rails has smooth sides that go down with a V-shape, the real winning feature of this boat, providing a neutral behaviour in turbulent water where you typically find stability issues.

But let’s take a closer look in the water to check performance: I tried DR9 in the slalom course in Ivrea during the recent “Dragorossi Test day” and on the more familiar to me Soča stretch till the broken bridge with a medium flow. The seat was positioned at the second ahead hole (having 4 holes there’s no central position). I could feel quite comfortable inside, I don’t particularly love this multi-adjustable thigh-braces, I kind of prefer more simple solutions; the back bend is a bit too high, blocking my back in a way that my moves were a bit limited. The boat is fast with a good acceleration, the V-shape hull doesn’t show a great primary stability, but I like to drive the boat on the sides so I didn’t find any problem in that, on the contrary. Secondary stability is great instead. Easy to drive, precise and keeping the line, but at the same time very easy to turn despite the length. A technical boat and if you actively drive it you can only get great satisfaction. It also boofs very well.

In conclusion I’d say a more than positive initial opinion, It’s a boat not exactly for beginners and not for too extreme weights, to me the ideal weight range is between 65 and 86kgs.

What I liked most:
speed/acceleration
“driving” pleasure
precision and maneuverability at the same time
neutrality in turbulence

What I liked less:
thigh braces
too high back band
grab loops – not good enough

Be safe in the river

Dragorossi DR9 prime impressioni – IT

premicosce
schienalino troppo alto
maniglie non all’altezza

A presto in fiume
Beppe
