Mastallone

 Together is better!

36 people. What can they do together? Let’s see: the can organize nine 4x100 relays. Or three football teams, including also referee and assistants. Or – and that’s the best option – they can meet on a river bank with their kayaks and have fun. Guess what? We chose the last one!

As usual, nothing was planned. Wheater wasn’t really good: no melting (too cold) and no raining. Levels everywhere in Valsesia were low. But Sunday morning we found out with surprise that Mastallone (a Sesia tributary in low Valsesia) was actually good: “Hydro said 70, it’s good”! A few phone calls let us know that a lot of kayakers from all over North Italy were coming there too: Genoa, Milan, Sondrio, Brescia.. all of them with one and only destination: Valsesia, the Mecca for kayak pilgrims!

At the put-in the view is amazing! One by one, we jump in our boats and the river gets quickly painted with a kayak-made rainbow. The “mass-start” is great and soon a long and coloured snake winds through the river. The first big rapid is the one called “Frullatore” (“Mixer”): with this high level (meanwhile hydro had risen to 80) the rapid offers a perfect spot to try different lines. Someone tries it twice, someone even three times and… well, someone swims too! So cool!

The descent goes on without problems and in the blink of an eye we found ourselves at the entry of Mastallone gorge: with this level the enter rapid is way too dangerous, so everyone sets for quite a long portage. Now, I really would love to tell you about the beauty of this section of the river, but I won’t. Mainly because I spent almost the whole time in the gorge upside-down (thank God my roll was in good shape that morning). I will let pictures/photos speak for me, instead.
Once out of the gorge, a party-like atmosphere spreads among and never leaves us until the take out.
Thanks to all those who enjoyed this descent with us: what a day!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST: in recent years, Mastallone valley has been repeatedly threatened by hydroelectric plants. Now this issue is more important than ever. Today 36 people showed how to live the river in a different way. My hope is that in 10 years, other 36 people or more will do the same.

What a day!!!
