A Saturday on Sorba

Here we are: new weekend, new trip in Valsesia! Weather has been quite rainy in the last few days, so there is plenty of water all over the valley. On Friday evening Alessandro and I had a warm-up run on the Piode-Scopello section of Sesia, which is actually very enjoyable with this level, but the “main course” was on Saturday: Saturday was the day of Sorba.

Sorba is a right tributary of Sesia: it flows very close to our home in Campertogno but both Alessandro and I had never had the opportunity to descend it. As ususal, the voice had spread, so we found ourselves with Davide, Elena and other six people at the put-in, which is located on Gronda (a tributary of Sorba).
Sadly, we found out that hydro was not so high, someone even dared to say that it was low. Alessandro started the descent with possibly the worst line ever seen on Gronda: right, extremely right. Hitler-way right. SBAM! At first we were worried (for the kayak, not for Ale) but after a while we realized nothing serious happened, so we went on. Ale said he was distracted from people on the bridge of Rassa: he would never admit he chose the wrong line! Sorba flows through Rassa, one of the most beautiful villages of Valsesia. Houses are built in the typical Walser-Style and the position on the confluence between Gronda and Sorba gives Rassa a “wonderland” imagine. Last but not least, do not forget about the typical product of Rassa: grappa (schnapps), grappa for every taste! Blackberry, mountain flowers, honey… and more and more!
Let’s go back to the river. The descent continued with the three Sorba’s slides: the first is a Norwegian-like slide, a fantastic spot where to have a photo taken. The second one is an easy drop, while the third is a “S” full of adrenaline, which ends in a peaceful little lake. Last time I was on Sorba, my descent ended here. But this time we went on. All the rapids had a common point: rocks, lots of rocks. Davide took on all the scouting, which always ended with the same verdict: “watch out guys, this is a dirty one”. “And what about the last one”? I tought. “Was it clean”? However, everyone had a really good time, but Davide was without any doubt the main character. In just two rapids he managed to:
1      1)      lose the grip of his paddle and roll with the hand against a rock wall;
2      2)      choose an “alternative” line and roll twice, just above the scary entry rapid of the gorge.

     Elena, his girlfriend (and as usual the only girl of the group), tried to steal the scene by screaming about an imaginary giant siphon which was about to swallow her. Of course there was no siphon anywhere.

     Many rocks later, we finally arrived to the take-out. What to say then? A challenging river, it probably would have been smoother with a bit more water, but we can’t complain. I have to thank Miguel for lending to me his Ace of Spade, I don’t know if I would have kept myself dry without it. Yes, Miguel, I used your boat. It just couldn’t stay another weekend in the garage! ;-)

Sorba o son desto?

Siamo ancora qua: altro weekend, altro giro in Valsesia!

      1)      Davide che prova una linea inedita e si incasina nella rapida a monte dell’ingresso delle gole: la miguelata – perché di miguelata si tratta – non ha conseguenze anche grazie alla reattività del prode Giuliano, che non esita a tuffarsi in acqua per evitare casini maggiori;
      2)      Davide che perde la pagaia in rapida, limona in subacquea con un’altra parete ed eskima con le mani sui sassi. Almeno questo è quello che dice lui;
      3)      Pietro che viene riciucciato nel bucone alla fine della rapida di ingresso delle gole: se la cava con un eskimo semi-assistito da Davide;
     4)      Paolo che, stufo del monopolio di Davide in questi highlights, decide di prendere la situazione di petto e andare a bagno solo per guadagnarsi la citazione;
     5)      Elena che semina il panico millantando la presenza di improbabili sifoni giganti che la stanno risucchiando. Per la teoria “al lupo, al lupo”, poco dopo si incarterà in un terzo grado nell’indifferenza generale.

      Parecchi pim-pum-pam dopo, arriviamo finalmente allo sbarco. Che dire, un bel fiume, adrenalinico ed esigente: una bella stecca, come si suol dire. Io devo ringraziare la Ace of Spade di Miguel per avermi evitato un paio di bagni sicuri. Ah Miguel, te l’ho presa in prestito, non ricordo se te lo avevo chiesto. D’altronde, quando il calabrese non c’è, il nordico balla. Anzi, pagaia.
