Sunday I
was lucky enough to run a Piedmont’s gem: The San Giovanni, in the Lago
Maggiore’s area (Verbania)
The day
started as always: not knowing where to go, when to set off and who to go with
… so, me and my friend Luigi, while heading north, kept on calling kayakers to
find some good options.
After a lot
of calls, and some alternatives we found a group going to the San Giovanni…
Deal!
Driving
through the narrow valley, the water seemed too little… but only because there
is a small dam, stealing some water in the middle section; moreover, the river
is so narrow that good water in the wider section means a lot of trouble in the
gorges.
When we
first arrived, the water level was perfect, and the character of the river very
clear:
the first
rapid consists of four drops in sequence, surrounded by an amazing scenery!
The valley
is very similar to the near San Bernardino’s one: very narrow, featuring a lot
of gorges made of dark stone.
Anyway, the
San Giovanni valley is steeper and with less water. The descent was
characterised by a lot of drops and dirty rapids.
We were
forced to make few portages due to two big sieves and some trees stuck in the
middle of rapids.
Overall, an
amazing descent with a great group!
The
reference hydrometer is the San Bernardino’s one, it needs to be at least 2.0,
but with this type of river it’s always a bet! In case it’s not worth it, you
can always go for the San Bernardino or the Strona.

La giornata, ovviamente, parte secondo il teorema del
canoista pavese [Vedi report del Pennavaira], io e Luigi in macchina,
genericamente diretti verso nord.
Poche idee ma confuse: qualcuno ci propone un Verzasca,
ma non era nelle nostre corde; qualcuno Sermenza, ma in Valsesia andrò tutta la
stagione; San Bernardino ha un bel livello… ma da soli?
Giro di telefonate e di rimando in rimando alla fine
scopriamo che Pante & co. sono diretti sul San Giovanni… anche noi allora!
Salendo per la strettissima valle l’acqua sembrava
pochina… arrivati invece ai passaggi importanti il livello è perfetto! alla
fine è un fiume molto stretto, se sembra che abbia abbastanza acqua dove si
allarga un po’ nelle gole c’è da scappare!
La partenza chiarisce subito lo stile del fiume, sono 4
salti in successione! L’ultimo boof, oltre ad essere stupendo, finisce in una
pozza con un’altra cascata che arriva da un affluente, posto magico!
La valle è molto simile a quella del vicino San
Bernardino, strettissima, il fiume quasi tutto in gola con pareti di roccia
scura.
Ha meno portata del San Bernardino, ma più pendenza, la
discesa sarà caratterizzata da salti, golette strettissime, e dove il fiume si
allarga un po’ rapide abbastanza sporche. Purtroppo parecchi tronchi e rami che
ci costringono a qualche trasbordo in più oltre ai 2 obbligati (2 grandi
sifoni). In realtà il primo sifone siamo riusciti a passare tutto a sinistra
strisciando sulle rocce, attenzione comunque!
Discesa da incorniciare, bel gruppone (e neanche tanti
casini dato il numero di persone in acqua), bellissimo fiume e la fortuna di
averlo trovato con un buon livello!
