Waka Tutea review

A kayak with a very important name, the name of a 7,5 meters drop on the Kaituna river in New Zealand.

But before the real description let me say that I’m 1,68 m high and that I weight 55 kg; in this way you’ll know “who” has tried this kayak.

I started kayaking in 2011 and I’ve been using Tutea for one year. I’ve run mostly class IV rivers, a lot of typical Alpine creeks (Alpin Sprint, Sermenza, Mastallone) but also on rivers with more water last summer in Norway.

The first time I saw the Tutea I fell immediately in love, true love at first sight. I tried it first on the Kaituna river (we borrowed it from Kenny Mutton, the designer of Tutea), after a rapid I knew She would have been my next kayak.

The design of the Tutea is nice, her aggressive lines are super. Tutea’s length is 250 cm and the wideness is 65cm, so she might seem a little too wide, but that gives her more stability and combined with the flat hull makes Tutea fast and predictable. The nose is high enough to jump over everything even if it is not high as the Tuna’s.

The outfit is very simple but it works well. The seat is pretty high and I like it because it allows me to stay higher on the deck and to take more vertical strokes. This feature is super good especially for girls and young guys that will find easier conducting the boat. For example, at the beginning I was a little bit scared that the boat could have been too big and that I could have needed too much strength to control, but with the higher seat it feels like the boat is much more soft and smooth to paddle. Actually there could be some little trouble with your roll, if you are not too confident with it, especially if your previous boat was a rounder one.

She’s fast and precise. Kenny Mutton told us that Tutea is faster than Tuna as he did a better time on Kaituna race with Tutea. The rails allow you to feel every little change in the water but thanks to the fact that Tutea is wide, this boat is very stable and never tricky. It’s better not to forget about the rails on the bottom if you are running something too bony! As I said Tutea is not a tricky boat but neither a super easy one. She makes you feel comfortable and you always have the desire to try more. She involves you in a journey to become a better kayaker.

The bow is really high and Tutea has a lot of rocker, making your boof big as never before and your landing the fastest. This awesome “skipping out of the hole feature” is inherited from Tuna and allows you to pass through big holes safely. The first time I ran Alpin Sprint I was surprised from how fast Tutea skipped out of holes, like someone was kicking me out.

This little Waka has been good to me on every kind of river, but is when you are running a middle volume creek that she gives the best! When you drive Tutea on water she starts to fly!

In the end I think this is the perfect boat to raise the bar confidently, but thanks to the edges and flat hulls you’ll have fun also on the backyard class II-III run.

The Tutea is perfect to run pushy water as long as your weight is under 75 kg. If you weight more than that she will still be good on every kind of run but will require a good technique and timing to stay on top of every feature.
